European Doctoral Thesis of Juan Jose Gálvez, University of Murcia

Last October 28th I took part of the Committee who evaluated the PhD thesis of Juan Jose Gálvez from Murcia University in Spain. The thesis entitled “Throughput optimization of Multi-hop Wireless Networks through interference-aware load balancing” deals with the optimization of throughput in Multi-hop Wireless Networks (MWNs) which is an important topic currently being studied by the scientific community. These networks represent a promising technology for numerous applications, and several types of MWN are presently being studied and deployed. The thesis addresses the important problem of load balancing to maximize network utilization and improve flow throughput and fairness.

Based on the quality and significant contributions made by the thesis developed by Juan José Gálvez García, the committee graded the Thesis with the maximum grade of “CUM LAUDE”. Congratulations Juan Jose!!

I had the opportunity to meet again my colleagues Pedro Ruiz and Antonio Skarmeta, as well as enjoying the gastronomic delicatessen of the region of Murcia visiting the “Torre de Zoco” restaurant.

Attending to the IFIP Wireless Days 2011, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. October 2011

I attended to the 4th IFIP Wireless Days which took place at the Embassy Suites Niagara Falls Fallsview Hotel, located 100 yards from the brink of beautiful Niagara Falls in Canada.

I arrived Saturday afternoon at Toronto international airport, and I stayed my first night at Radisson Suite Toronto airport Hotel, a very convenient hotel for short stays, near the airport. I took a cab to walk over Toronto Downtown.

Here you can see the Toronto Skyline, which is clearly identified because of the Canadian National Tower. The CN Tower was declared in 1995 one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. At the top of the tower the «360 CN Tower» restaurant is located, which includes the world’s highest wine cellar, “the cellar at the sky”, created to resemble a typical underground wine cellar.

From Toronto I went to the Niagara Falls by the «Niagara Airbus services«, which offers roundtrip services from/to  Toronto airport area and the Niagara Falls area (including Hotels) at a very convenient prices.

In the Niagara Falls I stayed at The Embassy Suites Niagara Falls Fallsview Hotel, a four diamond all suites luxury hotel located 100 yards from the brink of beautiful Niagara Falls in Canada, where the IFIP Conference took place. The Falls are just Greats and Amazing! During my stay I visited both the Canadian side (where the conference took place) and the American side, just 2 km apart. I enjoyed the Conference, the Falls, The Casinos and the food. Here just some pictures of my visit to the wonderfull Falls!

Juan Carlos Cano attended MASCOTS Conference 2011 in Singapore, 25 July 2011.

During the last week of July 2011 I was attending MASCOTS conference. Sponsored by IEEE and in technical cooperation with the ACM SIGSIM, it is a well-established forum for state-of-the-art research on the measurement, modeling, and performance analysis of computer systems and networks. The 19th edition of this conference took place July 25-27, 2011 in the Raffles Hotel, Singapore.

I had enough time to enjoy not only the conference but also to admire the beauty of Singapore from little India, to the Arab streets and ChinaTown, as well as the financial district and Sentosa Island. It was a great time! Of special importance is to enjoy the different religions (from , Christianity, Islam, Hinduism , and Taoism) visiting their Temples.
