Jorge Graduated with Honor, Cum Laude

February 11th 2011, Jorge Hortelago graduated with honor, Cum laude, after defending his Phd entitled “Design and Implementation of Architectures for the Deployment of Secure Community Wireless Networks”. The evaluation committee remarked the social impact of Jorge’s research especially in the developing world which is helping to reduce the digital divide.

GRC organized a Seminar on Research and development of the motor industry in Spain. January 21st 2011.

January 21st 2011, Francisco Martínez organized in Teruel a seminar on research and development of the motor industry in Spain, and the role of the Aragon region. The seminar was presided by Alexia Sanz, Research Rector of the Campus of Teruel. The conference invited speakers were: (1) Carlos Hernanz. Director of the Foundation Antonio Gargallo, (2) Pietro Manzoni, Director of the Computer Networking Group of the Technical University of Valencia, (3) Juan José Alba, VEHIVIAL Group Director of the University of Zaragoza, (4) Daniel Urquizu. Managing Director of Motorland Aragón, and (5) Oscar Cisneros, Accidents Research coordinator of the Centro Zaragoza research institute.

Paco Graduated with Honor, Cum Laude

December 17th 2010, Francisco Martinez, a member of the GRC group graduated with honor, Cum laude, after defending his Phd entitled “Improving Vehicular ad hoc Network Protocols to Support Safety Applications in Realistic Scenarios”. Paco’s works was supervised by Prof. Juan-Carlos Cano and Prof. Carlos T. Calafate.

UPV Consejo Social awards 2010: X Edition

December 9th 2010, the Consejo Social of the UPV delivers the 2010 awards in its 10th edition. It includes the best student awards, the best master program, the best’s doctoral thesis, industry recognition as well as the distinguished teaching award, where seven professors including Juan Carlos Cano and Jose Vicente Benlloch, from the DISCA Department were recognized because of their individual excellence in teaching. The event was chaired by the Rector of the UPV, the regional secretary for science and University and the President of the Consejo Social.

Musical Band, Santa Cecilia del Grao, Valencia

Saturday November 27. Concert in honor of St. Cecilia and exaltation of the Muse of Music. Concert offered by the Titular Band and the Youth Band, and by the Child Choir and the Titular one. Andrea participated as a member of the Child Choir.

Wednesday 24 November 2010, Valencia completed the task of getting through to the next phase in the UEFA champion League and now Valencia want to finish first. So we have to defeat Manchester.  I was there!!!

Universidad Politécnica de Valencia – BANCAJA Prizes 2010

The Bancaja-UPV Joint Committee has granted 131 awards to the best final projects in enterprises run by cooperative educational programs during the 2009-2010 academic year. A total of 764 universities and 528 companies took part in this thirteenth edition. The ceremony of UPV-Bancaja Prizes will be on Wednesday December 1st at 12 pm in the auditorium of the UPV.

Juan Cristobal Pérez, one of my master student in Conputer Engineering, has been awarded for his final project entitled » Programa de mantenimiento de las instalaciones del parque zoológico BioParc de Valencia» which has been developed under the supervision of Juan Ángel Morcillo from BIOPARC Valencia, and Juan Carlos Cano from ETSinf at the UPV. Congratulations Juan!!

Malaga University, Attending to a PhD tribunal, November 2010

November 4th, 2010 I visited Malaga University, where I acted as a member of the tribunal who evaluated the PhD Thesis of D. Jose Rafael Luque entitled: “Modelado del retardo de transmisión Bluetooth 2.0+EDR». I enjoyed visiting Malaga again having the opportunity to meet some colleagues and enjoying Malaga’s gastronomy. It was a pleasure to share some time with Professors Antonio Díaz, Juan Manuel Romero, José Antonio Gázquez, Mario Castro, Eduardo Casilari, and Mª José Morón.

GRC at the 13th ACM MSWIM Conference, October 2010, Turkey

Juan-Carlos Cano from The GRC group attended the 13th ACM MSWIM Conference, which was held in Bodrum, Turkey, October 17-21, 2010.

In the Gala Dinner. Juan-Carlos Cano Workshop Co-Chair of the 5th 4-th ACM Workshop on Performance Monitoring and Measurement of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks together with Ángel Rumin who received the Best Paper Award, and a colleague from University of Morocco.

During my visit to Turkey I have the opportunity to enjoy the city of Bodrum in the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, as well as the city of Istanbul, European Capital of Culture 2010, where I visited Topkapi Palace, The Blue Mosque, the Great Bazaar, The Bosforo, The Golden Horn, and Hagia Sophia.

A GRC member interviewed by the Communications of the ACM Magazine

Francisco Martinez, a professor from the Escuela Universitaria Politécnica of Teruel, and  a member of the Computer Network Group (GRC), was interviewed by the Communications of the ACM Magazine . This prestigious digital publication of the Association for Computing Machinery edited a report last July on the technology applied to communication networks between vehicles, in which Professor Francisco Martinez expressed his opinion about the future of this tecnology where he has been doing active research in the Computer Networking Group of the Polytechnic University of Valencia and is the central research topic of his doctoral thesis.
